Area Mayor, Superintendent Take ISAT; Make Results Public
TWIN FALLS, ID (KMVT-TV) Are you smarter than a fifth grader? That’s the question KMVT set out to answer!
Twin Falls Mayor Greg Lanting and Superintendent of Twin Falls School District Wiley Dobbs took a sample portion of a fifth grade level Idaho standardized test, or the ISAT. The group then made their results public.
Before taking the exam, we asked local fifth graders to describe how they feel before taking the ISAT. They responded with feelings of tenseness and nervousness.
Their feelings don’t come as a surprise. Twin Falls Superintendent Wiley Dobbs explains the testing process, “Students in third grade through tenth grade take the language, reading and math test. And students in fifth, seventh and tenth grade take the science as well." Students are required to pass all portions of the ISAT before they can graduate.
With that in mind, Mayor Lanting and Superintendent Dobbs set off to see how they stacked up against the students.
Mayor Lanting has an Associates, Bachelors and Masters degree. He also has more than 30 years of experience working as a teacher and principle at area schools. The Mayor described his feelings going into the exam, "I've noticed a little bit of nervousness about it, making sure I wanted to do well and I'm sure fifth graders do the same thing."
Superintendent Dobbs has two Bachelor’s degrees and his Doctorate. He’s also a 1976 graduate of Twin Falls High School.

Superintendent Dobbs said in the end, putting himself in the students’ shoes turned out to be a learning experience for him, “In most cases I put too much into the question, I studied the question way too long."
Mayor Lanting adds, “One of the questions I missed I could have easily answered I just misread it to begin with."
Dobbs said he hopes the students can learn from his experience, "I hope it shows the kids that you shouldn't be afraid to take tests. You're gonna have to take tests all throughout your life and it's not really a failure if you learn from it."
