Ammon man sentenced to jail, probation for firing gun

IDAHO FALLS, Idaho (AP) — An eastern Idaho man was sentenced to jail and probation after authorities say he fired a gun into the ground following an argument with his ex-wife and her boyfriend.

The Post Register reports 33-year-old Ryan McDonald on Monday was sentenced to 45 days in jail and four years of probation after pleading guilty to aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

McDonald's attorney Allen Browning says the argument outside the home of his ex-wife escalated and her boyfriend began assaulting his client. He says McDonald grabbed a .40-caliber pistol from his truck and fired three times into the ground.

Browning says McDonald was in danger and he didn't point the gun at anyone.

Bonneville County prosecutors disputed that account, saying McDonald was not assaulted.
