(KMVT/KSVT) — Hagerman Fire Protection District works to contain a brush fire in the Billingsley Creek Wildlife Management area north of Hagerman.
Fire Chief Tim Peterson said the fire burns mostly cattail and reeds along the bottom side of wildlife management area. After about two hours of fighting a blaze against prevailing southeast winds, Peterson said crews had reached their main objective.
Peterson said the back burning was successful in keeping the fire from advancing to the north. At about 12:45 p.m. he said the fire was burning in the marsh area near the west side of the creek.
“If the winds hold we should be able to keep in on the west side of Billingsley Creek,” he said.
At this time, the cause and size of the fire is unknown.
KMVT will update this story when more information becomes available.
