Community invited to participate in Hailey Main Street Vision Project

HAILEY, Id. ( KMVT / KSVT ) - The City of Hailey is a recipient of a grant through a group called New Mobility West.

The grant is paying for a consultant called project for public places, who is coming to Hailey this week to brainstorm with the community- different ideas for improving Main Street.

“We’re in the business of helping communities come up with their own solutions. So we’re going to have some consultants come in from New York City called the Project for Public Spaces, who specialize in facilitating community dialogue and using the community to kind of come together and come up with a collaborative solution to some of these problems,” said Cameron Ellis, New Mobility West.

The workshops are intended to address a problem many small towns face, having a busy highway run right through the center of downtown.

The City of Hailey says it receives complaints ranging from noise levels from traffic to the speed limit, and even dust travelling into open store fronts.

“We hear a lot from the business community that it’s hard for them to put their goods out for table sales because it can be dirty and gritty, that trucks are loud, they’re noisy, that it feels unsafe to get out of a car if you’re parallel parking on Main Street. So the business community has really been asking us to study Main Street and see what we can do to make it more livable,” said Lisa Horowitz, City of Hailey.

“I think we can go down to two lanes, one in either direction. One North, one South, with a turning lane and take that extra space from the lane that we remove and pull out sidewalks, make a bike lane, and keep parking,” said Kaz Thea, Bike Head Coordinator for Mountain Rides.
The public is invited to a series of meetings beginning Wednesday, to share concerns and ideas.
The three public events include:
Placemapping – December 9th from 6-8pm at the Sustainability Center in Hailey. Work together to map Hailey’s assets and challenges. This will help determine which parts of town are working well, and which parts need help. Beer, wine, and snacks!
Street Audit – December 10th from 1-3:30pm. Meet at Hailey City Hall. Bundle up and take a walk down Main Street. Identify specific concerns and opportunities for improvement.
Holiday Square Booth- December 11th from 2-6pm. Located at Carbonate and Main Street. The booth will show the work done so far.
