BUHL, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) On Dec 18. Idaho Sen. Mike Crapo announced the nation’s military academy nominations for 2018-2019- academic year. Forty-four Idaho students’ applications are now being considered for U.S. academies.
Four students in the Magic Valley were among the nominated.
U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis – Landon Nurge of Ketchum and Hugh Sheldon of Buhl
U.S. Army at West Point- Theron Christensen of Buhl and Victoria Sievers of Kimberly
U.S. Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point- Theron Christensen of Buhl
Theron Christensen, a senior at Buhl High, said he’s very excited when he got the news.
“Very few I know, can get this far, I try to push myself above basic standards, just to make it here so far it’s a huge success,” he said.
Christensen is part of the wrestling, track, and football teams at Buhl High. With a sense of humor he said he’s an inch away from a 4.0 GPA
“I had one B. I almost cried over it, “he said.
Christensen said his cousins are part of the military and his grandfather was an Air Force veteran. His biggest supporter is his mom.
“She was super excited, she’s super proud of me already as it is,” he said. “It’s like one of her dreams for me to get there.”
Overall Christensen hopes to put Buhl on them map.
“Buhl growing, there’s a lot of special people around here that I know, and if you’re willing to put in time and effort, you can do anything,” he said. “It doesn’t matter the size of your school it’s just that inner will to succeed.”
The students will hear from the final selection in spring of 2018.
