New phone scam targeting southern Idaho

KIMBERLY, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) - Another telephone scam is targeting residents of the Magic Valley.

Over the last two weeks, Ronald Brackett has received three calls from an unlisted number.

The caller – a woman with a foreign accent – told him his phone number had been selected by the U.S. Department of Education to receive a large amount of money.

Brackett was smart enough not to fall for the scam, but wants to warn others in case they receive the same type of calls.

"All she said was 'this is for education and that you don't have to study, you don't have to go to school, you just have this money that you can do anything you want with, and you never have to pay it back.'"

You can report phone scams by contacting the State's Attorney General, your local police department, or by filing a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission.
