Magic Valley population increasing
Twin Falls Chamber of Commerce President Shawn Barigan says our unemployment rate for the South Central Idaho area continues to hover around 9% - slightly below both the statewide and national rates.
That means 91% of people in the Magic Valley area who can ARE working.
Barigar says, "although we are seeing improvements in the number of people working in the service sector - offsetting a reduction on the number of people working in the goods producing sector."
With the new data recently released from the US Census - our 8-county area has grown to a population of just over 182,000.
"Twin Falls County and Jerome County each grew by more than 18 percent in the past decade. We're seeing a faster growth rate amoung Hispanics (a 71% increase since 2000). The Idaho Department of Labor projects annual growth for the region of about 1.5% in the coming years."
Jan Roeser, Regional Economist with the Idaho Department of Labor will talk about some of these statistics and more information on employment trends at the Chamber's Economic Issues Forum on Tuesday from noon to 1pm at 9 Beans and a Burrito.
