Ah, the first day of school. It's an emotional time and one the parent and student probably will never forget.
Ted Popplewell, Elementary School Director says, "Kindergarten is one of the most exciting opportunities when they start their school experience. I always look forward to it when I was a principal, students come in and their parents."
This week Kindergarten registration begins for the Twin Falls School District. Parents are registering their students for the upcoming school year.
Popplewell says, “they’ll have information to fill out like a registration packet. They need to have the official state birth certificate, not the souvenir one you get at the hospital."
An immunization record is also required along with proof of residency which Popplewell says can be a power bill or rental agreement.
Popplewell states, “the Twin Falls School District, we work with folks; we will prepare the necessary paperwork so they can send to the state to get the birth certificate."
For Popplewell, he remembers Kindergarten being different from what it is today.
"We did our ABC's, sang some songs and ate milk and cookies every afternoon."
Now there are more perks to Kindergarten than just cookies.
"A number of the things we used to do in the first grade have now been moved down to Kindergarten."
But students aren't required to be enrolled in kindergarten. Those who don't take the class already head into first grade with a disadvantage.
"They'll need the extra help. Parents look ahead and say hey, I need my kids in Kindergarten."
Any words of wisdom for the parents of the class of 2024?
"Read every night."
