BUHL, Idaho (KMVT-TV) The sophomores, juniors and seniors at Buhl High School are under the Gear Up Grant.
The school applied for the grant and received it because of its economic status.
Megan Bourner, Buhl High School Counselor says, "a lot of schools in Idaho who receive the free/reduced lunch, all receive the grant."
The school has been able to tutor some of the students and help them graduate on time. Plus, the grant provides funds to help the students take dual–credit courses for free.
"The students love it. I had students last year go to Gear Up Camp and it provides them leadership skills for them...Because of our demographics, there are a lot of students who don't experience how great college can be and that finances are detrimental."
And when money is lacking, a certain goal might be postponed...
"Students don't realize what kind of support is out there, so they think if they don't have money, they can't go to college."
But thanks to the Gear Up Grant, it's saving families from spending their hard earned cash.
