Fit And Well Idaho: Cardiac Rehab
Burley, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) Cardiac rehab is offered at Cassia Regional Medical Center in Burley.
The program helps the heart and the rest of the body get stronger.
Designed for patients who've had heart attacks or surgery, the program is gaining in popularity.
When you walk in , you might think you were at your neighborhood gym, but here exercise physiologist Sandra Burch is preparing the patient for cardiac rehabilitation.
Burch explains, "what we do first, is we hook them up on telemetry so we actually monitor their heart while they exercise to make sure there's not any abnormalities that show up on the EKG. We take their blood pressure, their heart rate, their oxygen saturation to make sure that's not going down and then we exercise them on equipment."
Some of the examples of equipment used include treadmills, new step and bicycles.
"If they're in good shape and physically fit, we get them into using a StairMaster," says Burch.
The amount of referrals is growing from the cardiologist and local physicians, but other hospitals have taken notice.
"Also from Portneuf Medical Center and St. Luke's in Twin. We've also had quite a few people who've had surgery in Twin Falls and Boise and will come back here for the cardiac rehab."
Many programs last just three months, but each rehabilitation plan is based on the patient's needs.
"It's a really good program, we've had no complaints."
Reducing your chances of a heart attack, one session at a time.
Cardiac rehab is often covered by health plans and medicare for the first two or three months.
