Fit And Well Idaho: Pain Management

Tools

By Brittany Cooper

Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) St. Luke's Magic Valley has a team dedicated to pain management and with September being National Pain Awareness Month, it's the perfect time to discuss the topic.

RN Susan Baisch explains, "we have the Care Channel which is Channel 22 in each of our patient's room that a patient can turn to get soft music and help people to relax. We also have our aroma tabs that are lavender or citrus smells that you can place on a patient's gown to help them relax."

There's also a Comfort Cart available on each floor of the patient tower. Puzzles, books, bibles and movies, are all positive distractions.
Best of all, there's no additional cost to the patient for any of the pain management techniques.

"We've had very positive feedback from the patients, from our pediatric patients up to our geriatric patients that are happy with all of the options that we can give them now for pain medication besides pain medication," adds Baisch.

Surgical patients can bring in their own mp3 players before and after the surgery.

Baisch says, "we have other ways they can get music, on the TV, we have some radios that they can plug ear phones into to listen to music."

Reducing the stress of a hospital stay.
