Fit And Well Idaho: YMCA Youth Fitness

By Brittany Cooper

Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) In this week's Fit and Well Idaho, we're exploring the world of youth fitness here at the YMCA.

"We just get the opportunity of instilling the importance of exercise in people before they actually become adults. So that we actually know what we're doing, we've got that instilled in us, we can get out in and be more active. We can help with the obesity challenges that we have right now," explains Christina Fennell, Youth Development Coordinator.

Tonight's course features the 'Beat It' class... using drumsticks, a ball and the children's freedom to express themselves.

"I'm really good at keeping the beat to songs," says eight year old JJ Funk.

"The teachers are the best... they play music and do fun games and that's really cool," adds seven year old Taitom Sparks.

For Gabe Snyder... age-wise he just makes the cut to participate in the program.

The same can't be said for his sister, though.

"She's downstairs cause she's one year old. She has to be six years old and I'm in kindergarten," Gabe explains.

Even though the upstairs room is surrounded by children... parents are welcomed to join.

"Cause there's lot of activities to play with,” Emma Rawlins says.

"We want to have them to see the importance of their parents exercising and them and it gives them a chance to work out together... We have Krazy Kardio, youth weights which are light weights, you don't go very heavy with them because of the growth plate issues that could happen. We have some mind games that we do, we've got fun games," Fennell says.

The classes vary by location and time.

Non-members can receive a day pass at a cost for the children to participate in the activities.
