Fit And Well Idaho: Yoga For Cancer Survivors
Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KSVT-TV ) A new class has arrived at the Mountain States Tumor Institute.
Deb Lister ran a yoga class for cancer survivors in Illinois before arriving at Saint Luke’s a couple of years ago.
The class became a reality in Twin Falls through the partnerships within the Saint Luke’s health system.
"Between the cancer rehab program and outpatient services in Boise, we've been able to begin this program," Lister explains.
If you've never taken a yoga class before, don't worry. Postures are modified to meet your needs and Saint Luke's provides the participants with yoga mats.
"With the movements that we do in yoga, they're very slow, very controlled, very mindful. It helps the cancer survivors to improve their flexibilities perhaps in areas they've had surgery, particularly breast cancer survivors. It's very helpful for increasing range of motion in their upper body," Lister says.
The movements help to detoxify the body from drugs, especially when patients undergo chemotherapy.
"They do it within their own range of motion. I am simply a guide; they are their best teachers in doing this kind of movement," Lister explains.
Cancer patients, cancer survivors and caregivers are all welcome to attend.
The class is offered Thursdays from 5:30 to 6:45 in the evening.
They're in the midst of an eight-week session right now.
