Groups of kids begin fitness camp
Today 35 kids from kindergarten through 6th grade started the week long Kids Fitness and Wellness Camp at the College of Southern Idaho.
This was a chance for the kids to get out of the house - and start laying a strong foundation for their future health.
Fitness Camp Director Jaime Tigue said, “Childhood obesity is quite a problem, not only in our area, but as a nation. And just doing our little part to get kids to understand how important it is to be active throughout their whole day, rather than sitting and watching TV.”
Activities ranged from 'duck, duck, goose' for the youngest campers, to somewhat more intensive ways to get your blood pumping outside in the sunshine for the older kids.
Fitness camp participant Carlos Munoz said, “It's hard to catch the frisbees. Hard to throw the foxtails. But overall, it's been really fun playing here.”
During a break inside, the campers also learned about which foods are healthy snacks, and why. Tigue says it's an attempt to help prevent diabetes and other health related problems.
Tomorrow, the kids will try their hand at the CSU ropes course - and Wednesday they're looking forward to hiking and rock climbing at Dierkes Lake.
Tigue said, “I'm trying to promote active lifestyles and bring in all the activities that they learn at kids camp, they can take home with them. So we're trying to teach them activities they can do on their own, without a whole lot of equipment.”
