A man that pled guilty to nearly beating to death a two year old girl was handed his sentence today.
31 year old Nathan Mort plead guilty to one count of aggravated battery last year.
Today Judge Randy Stoker sentenced Mort to a total of 15 years in the state prison, with 6 years fixed and 9 years indeterminate.
The incident happened in February of 2010.
Initially Mort told police the child had fallen down a flight of stairs.
Later, he admitted to punching the child several times.
The young girl is now three years old and doing ok. She will have some lifelong health challenges.
Mort has no prior criminal history. In a pre–sentence investigation mort showed no characteristics of a child abuser. Family even testified their shock that Mort would have done something like that.
Judge Stoker said Mort literally snapped that day.
Mort's council said a trust was set up for the victim.
Restitution was requested at a little more than $200,000 dollars.
