UPDATE - ISP Releases Name of Officer ISP Trooper Shoots Man

08/18/08 - UPDATE -

The Idaho State Police and Magic Valley Sheriff's Association Critical Incident Task Force (CITF) are continuing their investigation into an officer-involved shooting which took place early Saturday morning on State Highway 30 northwest of Kimberly near the SH 50 junction.

ISP released the name of the trooper involved Monday afternoon. Trooper Michael A. Wendler, 25 of Twin Falls, joined ISP in July of 2006 and is based out of the Region 4 ISP office in Jerome. He had served with the U.S. Marine Corps prior to joining ISP.

Trooper Wendler had just arrested 29-year old Cody Hanks of Burley on suspected DUI and possession of a controlled substance. During the arrest, Hanks broke free and attempted to drive away from the scene. Trooper Wendler became entangled by the pickup and when the subject would not stop, the trooper fired one shot, fatally wounding Hanks.

Wendler received minor injuries in the incident and was treated and released. He remains on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues.

According to the Idaho State Police at just before 5am a State Trooper made a traffic stop on State Highway 30 near the State Highway 50 junction.

The subject was 29-year old Cody Hanks from Burley.
The trooper tried to arrest the man under charges of DUI and possible possession of a controlled substance.

Officials say Hanks resisted arrest and ran back to his pick-up.
Wayne Tousley, Twin Falls County Sheriff says "The trooper was attempting to control him as Mr. Hanks drove away. The trooper was being drug down the roadway in the driver's door of the vehicle. The trooper fired one shot causing Mr. Hanks to lose control and go off the roadway."

Officials say Hanks died as a result of the shooting.

The Magic Valley Sheriff's Association Critical Incident Task Force is investigating the case.

Officials say that the trooper whose name is not being released at this time is physically fine.
