1 Dead in Rafting Accident
Twin Falls County
Early Sunday afternoon a Twin Falls County Deputy was sightseeing and happened to see a raft get into trouble on the Snake River just west of the Hansen Bridge.
Twin Falls Sheriff Officials say that four people were in the boat when it came off the rapids – and ended up getting stuck in a hole—throwing all of them into the water.
Spokesperson Lori Nebeker says they were able to get back onto the craft and decided they would swim to shore. While one made it to the shore – another rafter – Dirk Gombert of Idaho Falls was found unconscious in the water.
Sheriff Tom Carter says “3 of them went on the low side of it and 1 of them ended up on the high side trapped between the boat and the rapids. Which he there and got into some trouble, was released and floated on down, the other rafters pulled him into an area where they could stand and started doing CPR.”
Reeder Flying Service had to be called to pick up the victim. Officials say CPR had to be performed on Gombert for an hour before the helicopter came. Sheriff officials say the others were just shaken up.
Sheriff Carter says "It's my assumption they're alright. No one else was life–flighted out. As you can see there's a lot of boaters and rafters down there at this point." "It's dangerous and what make it especially dangerous is there is no one way we can get down and help them.
