A Day at the Races

Rupert

By R. Giffoni

Hundreds of people gathered at the Minidoka county fairgrounds to watch the Idaho State Championship Chariot Races.
This is the first year the State Championship Races have been held in Rupert.
The event started Saturday.
Two to three teams come out of the gate at the same time.
These quarter horses just barrel down 440 yards– that's a quarter of a mile – down the track, reaching speeds of 35 to 40 miles an hour.
Gary Jones, seasonal judge says "A lot of work goes into training these horses.
You exercise them and feed them right. That's about the size of it – but just – a lot of work goes into it."
Today, about 20 different teams raced.
About 50 teams raced in the whole competition.
Officials say, they hope the races will be held here again next year.
