Idaho State Police say that 25–year old Illinois resident Jesse Reed was headed westbound on Interstate–84 on the way to Oregon, when he failed to take the turn at milepost 172.
He crossed the median and went through eastbound traffic, ending up in a field.
Trooper Nick walker says that based on road evidence and speaking with reed, he fell asleep at the wheel.
But the fact he managed to avoid oncoming traffic was significant.
Sergeant Keith Thompson with ISP says "it's definitely a dangerous situation. if he would have hit any of the vehicles eastbound, a truck that heavy would have caused some damage, even some lives."
The truck was carrying three transformers and police thank those with the nearby Si-Ann Dairy for using their equipment to pull one of the transformers out of the canal.
Thompson says that the transformers had an oil leak coming out of them.
"Right now we're trying to figure out what type of oil it is. There’s a good chance it's a non–hazardous material, like a mineral oil or packing oil if you will."
Haz–mat determined that no hazardous materials entered the canal.
Emergency crews took reed to St. Benedict's hospital with minor injuries.
He was cited for inattentive driving.
