Watching Out for Motorcycles

By S Casey

The weather is getting nicer and many of us want to hit the road for an extended weekend getaway or afternoon ride.
That means motorcycles will be making more of a presence and sharing the road with other motorists.
Sgt. Keith Thompson with Idaho State Police says "We're seeing more motorcycles on the road; therefore, we'll see a few more accidents. It just come with the increase of the motorcycles and having people get used to having more motorcycles on the road again while they're driving."

Jerry Morton is the South Central District Captain of the Patriot Guard Riders and an avid motorcyclist.
He says that with fuel prices on the rise – we will be seeing more of them on the road.
He just encourages everyone to be aware and cautious.
"You will find that most of the time an accident involving a motorcycle versus a car, most of the time the driver said they never saw the motorcycle."
Teddi Morton says
"It's the cars coming out of the intersection that don't look the second time to make sure. I look for their front wheel; it starts to move or if it never stops I start looking for my way out."
Thompson says that even though in the state of Idaho helmets are not required for those over the age of 18, he still encourages you to wear one.
"A helmet can save your life if you get into a crash and for people in regular vehicles and cars, just be careful at intersections, taking an extra look to be looking out for the motorcycles."
