SLMV announces construction of new outpatient surgery center

Twin Falls, Idaho - Construction will get underway soon on a new St. Luke’s Outpatient Surgery Center; it will be close to, but not part of, the new hospital that is scheduled for completion next summer.

Each year St. Luke's Magic Valley conducts three to four-thousand surgeries on an outpatient basis.

John Groesbeck, COO., St. Luke’s Magic Valley says, "One of the things we heard from patients and physicians all the year is doing outpatient surgery on otherwise very healthy patients and trying to have that service provided in a congested, busy hospital area is maybe isn't the patient friendly environment."

That's why they're putting an outpatient surgery center in between Davita Dialysis Center and Canyon Crest Dining and Event Center.

Groesbeck said, "We believe that by developing a surgery center away from the main hospital campus, that will be more convenient for patients, provide a more efficient environment because we won't have the interruptions that we can get from an emergency, or impatient floors."

He says that they submitted their building permits with the city and anticipate construction to begin this summer.

Groesbeck also says, that while the number of surgeries remains the same, outpatient volumes are increasing, while impatient volumes are decreasing.

"As technology improves, as our ability to care for certain illnesses improve, more and more of that services being done on an outpatient basis."

He anticipates about 1500 outpatient cases will be done through the center, while other surgeries involving risk factors or patients with health issues will be done at the main campus.

""We'll have a much more robust ability to respond if there's a negative outcome."
The facility will be 16,000 square feet initially, opening with three operating rooms, with the capacity to have four; the project is budgeted to be about $4.5 Million.
