Local providers gather in KMVT community room, discussing Toys for Tots
KMVT has been involved with Christmas for Kids since 1985.
Thursday, local providers gathered for a luncheon, to talk about the 2010 season.
KMVT Local Community Organizer Paul Johnson, the 2010 season brought on more challenges, he says due to a slump in the economy. He said, "It's just hard for parents to do everything they need to do, and provide Christmas for their kids."
Thanks to the program, in 2009, about 3,500 children were able to have Christmas. In 2010, the number rose to over 5,000.
Providers say, where there's a need: they'll work to fill it. Johnson said, "I don't think, in the time I've been doing this, that we've ever said, "Sorry, we're out of toys".
Events like the annual Christmas in the Nighttime Sky are the driving force behind donations.
2010's Nighttime Sky brought in over 1,300 toys. Providers are now gearing up for the 2011 season. They'll start accepting applications for toys, as well as pushing for donations in the fall.
They say this event couldn’t be possible without help from the community.
