First On KMVT.Com: Jerome Shooting
Leading our news tonight is a story from Jerome where one person is dead and another seriously injured in a residential shooting.
We spoke with both neighbors and the Jerome city police chief and we'll tell you what they had to say in tonight’s top story.
At about ten fifty this morning both Jerome police and Jerome county deputies responded to 2215 5th avenue east after receiving a report of someone being shot.
Police Chief Dan Hall Says, "Upon arrival there they determined that two people had been the victim of gunshot wounds, they also took into custody one suspect at the time they arrived there."
This is the man officer took into custody.
72 year old Fortino Garcia Leon. He is currently being held in the Jerome county jail.
According to authorities Leon is married to one of the victims.
41 year old Maria Leon who received apparent gunshot wounds.
She was air lifted to St. Lukes Magic Valley Regional center. Her condition is unknown at this time.
The other victim is 22 year old Javier Zavala Paniagua. He also received apparent gun shot wounds and was taken to St. Benedict’s family medical center where he was pronounced dead.
Chief of police Dan Hall says neighbors assisted before police arrived.
Hall says, "Several of the neighbors actually helped confront the suspect and prevented him from leaving prior to the arrival of police."
Chief Hall says it’s fortunate no one else was hurt and appreciates citizen’s help, but may not have been the best thing to do.
Hall says the incident is currently being investigated as a homicide.
However, he says charges against Leon will not be filed until Monday by the county prosecutor.
