Possible Lawsuit Against Canyon County Jail
Six inmates represented by the American Civil Liberties union of Idaho are suing Canyon County in federal court.
They say conditions at the county's overcrowded jail amount to the cruel and inhumane treatment of inmates.
The lawsuit was filed in U.S. district court on Friday.
The inmates are asking a judge to allow them to bring a class action suit, so that every inmate in the jail may be represented.
The inmates allege that at least one cell had blood caked on the walls and wasn't cleaned before a new inmate was brought in.
Officials say county leaders have been struggling to address chronic overcrowding in the jail for years and have known since last fall the aclu intended to sue.
The jail has exceeded its 361-person capacity since 2001.
