It's that time of the year when people make resolutions, and most of the time their goal is to lose weight.

Hundreds of locals are hitting the ground running this year, literally.

Saturday, the $10,000 Magic Valley Weight Loss Challenge kicked off for its third year at the Twin Falls' YMCA. Last year, there were 475 people competing. In just one day this year's challenge already has 250 signed up.

Andrea Faulkner said, "I knew I was up there and I've struggled with it so a long time so it's not a huge shock. I'm just shocked that I let myself get this far."

It's that shock which brought Andrea Faulkner here. The Wendell woman is among hundreds gearing up for a tough road ahead. She said, "I am a mother of three. I'm busy. I work full time and go to school part time and I really want to lose some weight and I'm tired of being tired all the time."

She's not alone. Meet another competitor also tying up his shoes to knock numbers off the scale. Jerom Fagaldefeg said, "The $10,000 is a great motivation. Staying fit, coming to the Y as much as I can and eating right, laying off the Big Macs and Whoopers."

The experts say there are many ways to lose weight, but number one is remembering it's a lifestyle change. Although everyone says they have their own way to lose the pounds.

YMCA C.E.O. Gary Ettenger said, "Pace yourself. Set goals and pace yourself. sometimes you see programs on TV where people lose 200 pounds in 6 months, that's not the way to do it. Drink your 8 glasses of water a day. Eat five small meals a day. Start moving."

Kurt Hefner, of Kurt’s Pharmacy, said, "I can't really think of any disease that's not affected by weight loss so we wanted to make an impact in the community and raise money for non-profit organizations."

For the challengers, it's the beginning of six months of hard work. But the prize in the end, is getting their life back.

It's not too late to sign up. The registration fee is fifty dollars, and you can still weigh in at Kurt's Pharmacy until January 22nd.

You do need to weigh in once a month at Kurt’s Pharmacy which is located in the Lynwood Shopping Center.

You must be 18 years or older to participate. First place wins $6,000. Second place, $3,000, And third place, $1,000.
