Let's Get Down And Derby

By KMVT News

Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) When you think of roller derby, you probably think of rough and tough girls on a mission to bruise up their opponents.

But, as the Magic Valley Derby Girls explain, it's much more than bruises, crazy outfits and nicknames.

In the 70's, roller derby was a spectacle sport comparable to professional wrestling. But now-a-days things are a bit different.

Magic Valley Derby Girls President Danielle Migler says, "We have derby names and sometimes wear crazy outfits, socks, fishnets we have alter egos on the track but it's still a lot of focus on the athleticism."

And that athleticism is something these ladies pride themselves on.

Magic Valley Derby Girls Member Hilary Williams says, "We all meet and watch different work out videos, the one we use most is a roller derby workout. you can do it with your skates or without them - they just add extra weight to these workouts and they're amazing. Holy cow my muscles are really getting tone and I feel great I have a lot more energy.

"I've never been very good at exercising by myself; I always come up with reasons not to go. I work ten hour days and commute 45 minutes to work so by the end of the day I just want to sit but if there's another group of people I can go work out with and have a good time doing it that's incredibly motivating."

Roller derby isn't just a great way to stay in shape, it's also a great way to make lifelong friends.

Williams says, "I didn't know any of the girls when I started so it's been awesome meeting a lot of new friends. I don't typically get out to meet a lot of people because I'm a stay at home mom most of the time. I've got kids at home that keep me super busy so having female adult contact is amazing. "

The Magic Valley Derby Girls will have its first bout April 13th against the Portneuf Valley Bruisers from Pocatello.
