Idaho Ag Exports

Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KSVT-TV ) In 2013, Idaho ag exports had another record setting year.

"We were up 6% from 2012... It’s been a very promising and important economic story about the success of Idaho agriculture exports," explains Laura Johnson, Idaho Department of Agriculture.

For the state of Idaho, dairy reigns supreme.

And the amount of dairy product leaving our state has the largest influence on that 6 percent growth, in total up 16 percent from 2012.

"It's no surprise that dairy products, and much of that from the Magic Valley, is leading our export growth," Johnson points out.

So where do all of Idaho’s products end up?

"Canada is our number one export market. Mexico is number two, and China is number three. Our next two are South Korea and then Japan," Johnson says.

All of the top four counties have seen an increase in Idaho products, except Japan.

"So we saw increases to Canada of 2%, Mexico of 8%, China an increase of 6%, and then South Korea was up 30%," Johnson explains.

That 30% South Korean increase is thanks to the "Korus" free trade agreement which allows for much more competitive pricing, with Idaho cheese leading the way.

As for the future of Idaho ag exports...

"We foresee additional growth in Idaho ag exports but probably not at the same rapid pace... so the growth will slow down, but we do anticipate very strong demand around the world that will continue to grow," Johnson says.

Making that “Grown in Idaho” label recognizable worldwide.

The main reason behind the slight decrease in Japan can be attributed to the devaluation of the yen.

But the ISDA feels those numbers could increase over the next few years.
