Waiting For The Right Price For Cattle
Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KSVT-TV ) High prices for cattle and lower numbers in herds are causing cattlemen across the west to make a difficult decision.
In this week’s segment of Grow Southern Idaho, we take a look at this problem facing many ranchers in our area.
With prices for feeder calves topping 180 dollars per hundred weight, and with the U.S. cow herd estimated at 29 million, the lowest in over 60 years, ranchers everywhere are facing the tough choice of retaining heifers to build their herd… or selling them to take advantage of the high prices.
Keeping back heifers holds the promise of big returns in three to five years, providing prices hold up.
From calves to feeder cattle and bred cows, all three have continued to increase in overall price, with some experts expecting the price to increase even more over the next few years.
So for the ranchers here in southern Idaho, it comes down to the waiting game.
