Jerome/Burley, Idaho (KMVT-TV) UPDATE: At 8:30 PM one lane of traffic eastbound will be reopened near mile marker 201.
About 5:30 Wednesday night an unexpected dust storm has caused a massive pileup of vehicles on I-84 near Burley. Authorities with Jerome County, Idaho State Police, Minidoka County and The Idaho Transportation Department are all on the scene working to untangle the wreckage. According to the Idaho State Police, Eastbound traffic is being diverted at the 201 exit. Jerome County Sheriff Doug McFall described the multiple accidents as “chaotic.” The first report of an accident came in just before 5. Because of the blowing dust, drivers were unable to see the other vehicles causing a chain reaction. In all there are several Semi Trucks along with other various vehicles involved. One Lieutenant from the sheriff's was forced to hit a guard rail to avoid hitting other vehicles already involved in the multiple wrecks. Then, a tractor trailer who had started slowing down was rear ended by a second semi truck followed by yet a third semi. When the third semi struck the second semi, the load of cheese the middle truck was hauling, scattered over the roadway . Rescue personnel also have to deal with fuel spills which is covering a portion of the road. As far as injuries, KMVT news knows of at least one man who was in an ambulance, but had to get out of it and be carried to another because the first one couldn’t get out of the snarled traffic. In all at least 15 vehicles were involved in the crash and at last word there are still a dozen or so vehicles blocking both lanes of the eastbound lane of travel. At this time police say they really don't know when the road will be opened back up to motorists.
