Gooding, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) The city of Gooding is still without a mayor. Last month, Duke Morton passed away.

Morton served the city since 2006. As mayor, he wanted to improve the infrastructure of the city, support growth and help get citizens involved.

"He set the bar for mayor very, very high, exclaims Vern France, Gooding City Council President.

France and Morton were both elected to the city council ten years ago.

"Duke had a very unique skill set that fit the job of mayor very nicely. He had the time and desire to devote to the issues and given a lot of thought and provided really good leadership through some difficult times."

Morton led the city of Gooding as mayor for six years and according to his peers, left behind a legacy of dedication and commitment to his city.

"He was instrumental in bringing the Wel Company into the industrial park in northeast Gooding and the improvements that have occurred there, done with state grants and also rural development money."

France assumed the mayoral duties and will continue until one is appointed or duly–elected.

"It's my understanding that petitions have been taken out to run for mayor in November, but no one has expressed interest in fulfilling the duties in the interim."

Most who become mayor typically already have a full–time job.

"Duke was an exception. However, when he started he was still full employed, the last 3 or 4 years he's been retired."

Responsibility and awareness comes with the position of mayor.
The question remains, who will that be?

For someone wanting to become the interim mayor, you must fill out an application with the city council. It takes a majority vote for approval.
