Hailey, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) - Crews are making progress on the southern portion of the Beaver Creek Fire northwest of Hailey in the Sawtooth National Forest. The fire, which was ignited by lightning Aug. 9, is 10-percent contained at 22,490 acres, with the north end of the fire at Shaw Mountain remaining the most active portion.

Firefighters tied into the anchor point on the southern edge of the fire and built line with crews and dozers in the Ditto Creek and Little Smoky drainage. Having a secure anchor point is essential for ensuring the fire doesn’t hook around established line and entrap firefighters. The western side is burning in gentler terrain, making it more accessible to fire crews.

On the east side of the fire firefighters are scouting areas to put in direct line and using helicopters to cool the fire in the Kinsey Creek drainage at the head of Deer Creek.

Helicopters are also putting water on a ¼-acre spot fire that ignited nearly two miles northeast of the main fire. Firefighters are assessing areas ahead of the fire to find places where they can safely and effectively put in fireline to stop the fire’s progression.
Weather conditions are not expected to improve, with warm, dry, unstable air in the forecast for the next three days.

Firefighters today continue to secure and control the southern portion of the fire and plan to work from an anchor point on the fire’s southwest corner, building fire line from that point to the northwest and northeast. Aviation resources are working to prevent the fire from spreading east into the Deer Creek drainage. Other efforts will focus on the northwest, where the fire crossed Warm Springs Road on Sunday night.

Warm Springs Road is closed at Red Warrior Creek. Warm Springs is closed, as are all trails south of Baker Creek Road on both sides of Warm Springs Road.

Three community meetings are planned this week for the residents of Fairfield, Ketchum and Hailey. All meetings begin at 7 p.m.:

o Tuesday: Legion Hall, 114 East Camas Avenue West, Fairfield

o Tuesday: Ketchum City Hall, 480 East Avenue North, Ketchum

o Wednesday: Wood River High School Performing Arts Center, 1050 Fox Acres Road, Hailey
