Elk Fire Nearly Contained

Prairie, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) - The Elk fire, which started by Lightning in Elmore county between Prairie and Pine on August 8 is now 95% contained. It has burned 131,258 acres and has cost taxpayers $9,994,887. There are 368 personnel on the fire. The blaze has destroyed 83 structures. 38 homes and 45 outbuildings. Today, firefighters will patrol and mop-up any remaining heat that poses a threat to the containment lines or any structures. Unnecessary equipment and trash will be removed. Fire crews will restore containment lines by placing debris, limbs, and displaced soil to help conceal them. Where needed, water bars will be constructed to divert flowing water and prevent erosion.
