Fresno, California (CNN) - For the first time in 15 years the entire state of California is in a drought.
A new assessment released Thursday shows 100 percent of the state is in some state of drought ranging from moderate to exceptional.
According to the national drought mitigation center website, nearly 25 percent of the state is considered to be in an exceptional drought.
That means there are widespread crop and pasture losses in some areas, along with water shortages in reservoirs and streams leading to water emergencies.
The Los Angeles times reports many cities have put voluntary water conservation measures in place in response to the drought.
And some cities are issuing mandatory restrictions.
