By Joey Martin

Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) Whether you look at it as a new fad or the wave of the future.

The use of electronic cigarettes is here and is gaining ground.

Joey martin for Idaho’s First News takes a deeper look at what exactly E–Cigarettes are.

And what exactly you’re inhaling into your body.

It's a widely undisputed fact that cigarettes are bad for your health.

For years, smokers have tried nicotine patches and gums, and expensive medications to help them quit.

And for the most part, to no avail.

But now, longtime smokers are finding relief in a new product.... Electronic cigarettes.

"It's a better alternative that doesn't come along with all of the adverse effects of smoking."
Said Steve Leavatt, owner of Vapaholic.

Now although those in favor of the use of e–cigarettes say this option is a no–brainer.

Nationally, poison control centers have seen a 161 percent increase in calls from people with concerns over e–cigarettes.

"We really don't have any long term data that says hey, does smoking an e–cigarette versus smoking a real cigarette actually cut down on risk of things like chronic obstructive pulmonary disease... lung cancer... heart disease. And we don't have any of those long term studies saying what the effects of e–cigarettes are."
Said Dr. Aaron Brown

With any new product hitting the market, federal regulations are often not far behind.

"We welcome common sense regulations. We do not condone the use for anyone under the age of 18. We want to supply a clean "niquid" for people to use that has regulations so that you know what you're getting."

With a lack of regulation, how do you know what exactly you're getting?

"I can't speak for other companies on what they're doing.... the products that we carry have 4 ingredients'; vegetable glycerin... which is a food grade preservative, propylene glycol... which also is a food grade preservative, flavoring extract, and then pharmaceutical grade nicotine. "All of our 'niquids' are made in a lab, in a clean room environment in Boise Idaho. A lot of the liquids that others are selling are from overseas."
Said Leavatt.
