By Andrew Reed

Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) October is 'Adopt-a-shelter dog month' many dogs are adopted this month throughout the Magic Valley.

Ralitsa Carter recently brought home three-month-old Rio; he's a lab, husky mix.

In the past, she always bought dogs from breeders. This time, she decided to go in a different direction.

"With my husband we've been discussing for a very longtime to whether or not to get a dog or not. We decided to get one and we thought the best thing for both us and one of those lucky dogs to just come home with us. That's why we decided to adopt” said Ralitsa Carter, adopted a dog.

Pets adopted from shelters and rescue groups typically cost less than pets purchased from a pet store or a breeder.

"As a rescue we are a non-profit so we don't make any money off of the animals. We charge what it costs us to put in medically and a small adoption fee. Overall the general original price you are looking at hundreds compared to $100 or $150,” said Beckie Wagoner, Anythings Pawsable.

With shelters full, the American Veterinary Medical Association reminds pet owners to consider your family, home, and lifestyle.

"A lot of people don't consider the impact a dog will make. It's a lifetime commitment; it's just like a kid. It's not a for now pet, until you have a baby pet, it's a commitment,” said Wagoner.

A commitment carter made, to give a rescue dog a chance.

"I feel like it's been a great experience and I would recommend to people to go out and find a shelter or Anythings Pawsable to find the perfect pet. We would not have changed anything if we had to go through it again. It's been an amazing experience, said Carter.

An experience for anyone, if you're ready to take care of a new friend.
