Blind Girl Becomes One Of Best Cross Country Runners In Her Grade

By KMVT News

Clovis, California (CNN) A little girl in California is proving to be an inspiration to her classmates.

Heaven Vallejos is blind... But that hasn't stopped her from becoming one of the best cross country runners in the fourth grade at her school.

With a little guidance from a special education instructor, she dashes around the track.

The two have formed a special trust through running together at practices and meets.

Vallejos says getting started wasn't easy, but it's getting better.

And her dad says he can see how happy his daughter is taking part in the sport.

"It was hard at the beginning when I started cross country, but it's getting easier," Heaven said.

"It's just brought her so much joy and I see her self determination and she's proud of herself. I know she is and she's just so happy to be doing something that everybody else is doing," added her father, Frank Vallejos.

Vallejos' instructor says it takes a lot of courage for her to run without a cane, and he says he is very proud of her too.
