Shasta County, California (CNN) - A volunteer fire chief in California has lost his home while trying to keep others from losing theirs.

Doug Atkins has been battling the so-called Clover Fire in Northern California's Shasta County since it started Monday.

He told KRCR-TV he went back the first night of the fire to see if his house was standing, but it was gone. His parents' home was also destroyed.

Atkins is hoping he'll be able to get back to his property and see what's left. The L.A. Times reports the fire has charred more than 7,900 acres and destroyed more than one hundred outbuildings.

As of this morning, it was 65-percent contained.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
