Clif Bar: Founded On A Bike Ride
Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) You never know where you'll be or what you're doing when a great idea comes to mind.
Clif Bar founder Gary Erickson was on a 175 mile bike ride at the time.
After consuming five of the competitor's bars, Erickson realized the last one didn't taste very good.
Hence the idea to form a better tasting bar came to light.
"We launched in 1992 and it was a wild ride ever since," Erickson said.
There are five aspirations behind Clif bar... business, brands, community, planet and people.
"We're a bottom line company. It's not just about profit and growth; it's about sustaining our people, the community around us, the community at large, the planet and long-term sustainability of our brand," Erickson explained.
A 21 year old journey that started in California, has expanded to Twin Falls.
"It made business sense for us to manufacture someplace where we could ship out to other places in the country," Kit Crawford, co-owner, pointed out.
"Everything sort of fit, the environmental aspect of doing business, the power generated here being hydro-electric, just the way people treat each other and build this community... there's all the sports we love to do: skiing, rock climbing, cycling, even golf. They're all right here," Erickson explained.
Another food giant, Chobani, also made the choice to expand to Twin Falls.
Did that factor into their decision?
"The fact that they were here was very interesting for us, that a company of that kind of exciting growing company would choose to be here, that made us think twice, and that was a good thing," Erickson said.
Clif bar... founded on a bike with a global mission.
The bars made here locally will be distributed and consumed throughout the nation, and possibly the world.
