Fit And Well Idaho: Patient Portal

Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) St. Luke's Magic Valley has had an electronic medical record system in place for six years. Physicians, nurses and other medical professionals can access these records, but now the patient is becoming involved with what's called a Patient Portal.

A medical file can be as thick as a book in some cases. St. Luke's Magic Valley and St. Luke's Jerome already track this information online.

But soon, patients will be able to accomplish this feat, with just a few clicks of the mouse.

Melissa Capps, IT Site Leader explains, "we will have resources for patients to search information to support their health conditions, or if they have questions on medications, we'll have resources available there on the portal. You'll be able to request things like answers to questions from your physicians."

"Now this really puts the patient more in charge and also allows for family members that are involved in the patient's care, if the family member is given access, that family member can actually have access to the Patient Portal," adds Debbie Kytle, Executive Director, Physician Services.

If you are a patient of St. Luke's Magic Valley and Jerome, don't worry.

"The St. Luke's clinic practices both in Jerome and the Magic Valley are now all in one common electronic medical record. So patients for those practices in both communities will be able to access the patient portal," says Kytle.

Most documentation will be accomplished in real time, but lab results may take four days to appear on the portal.

Kytle adds, "it really is more patient centered and family centered than the old world. Patients had to wait to see their doctor."

St. Luke's Magic Valley and St. Luke's Jerome are hoping to launch the Patient Portal this coming fall.
