The Idaho State Disc Golf Championship is an opportunity for competitors in an increasingly popular sport to come together.
Says Travis Taylor, tournament director, "We're just finishing up the second day. It's a two day tournament. This year we had 119 players from five states, the farthest players came from Tennessee and we had four players come from Portland, Oregon."
Says Jeremy Merchant, one of the participants, "I don't do very good every year, but I'm getting a little better. I just come out to have a good time."
Disc golf is a lot like regular golf with disc golf baskets instead of holes and different sized discs simulate different sized golf clubs that are normally used.
Says Merchant, "You got a putter, you got a mid-ranger, and you got a driver."
Taylor adds, "disc golf is played just like regular golf but instead you're just throwing a plastic disc. They are very aerodynamic; some guys are throwing these four-five-hundred feet."
Merchant adds, "it's pars and bogies and stuff like that, you count every stroke, you get out there and try to hit the farthest or in this case throw the disc the farthest."
For a lot of participants, the competition isn't the best part.
Says Merchant, "You see the same people year after year, tournament after tournament, you really get to know them. Great bunch of guys, great ambassadors for the sport."
Taylor adds, "To go out here with your friends, it’s pretty well priceless. Just come out here and watch the disc fly, there's nothing that will ever replace that."
Memories to last a lifetime, or at least until next year's tournament.
