Local Eight Year Old Gives Back
Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) Toys, clothes and money, that’s what most young girls want for their birthday. But Nola Gomes was different. She wanted to help other kids right here in the magic valley. She got the idea from a TV show.
"It's called TTI and that stands for The Time I and this girl thought it would be a good idea instead of getting presents for her birthday, she thought she would donate shoes to an orphanage that they didn't really have any that they could wear," said eight year old Nola Gomes.
Instead of shoes she wanted to donate backpacks. Those backpacks were full of school supplies.
"Because I wanted to help some people who didn't really have any school supplies that they could use since it was really close to the school year," said Gomes.
Nola's parents weren't sure what to think at first.
"At first we wanted to make sure that she really understood what she was doing. That she wouldn't be getting any gifts for herself and that she really was just getting things to donate to other kids,” said Trish Gomes, Nola’s mother.
They were proud of their daughter. But at the end of the day Nola was upset. Not because she didn't get any presents for herself, but because she didn't get enough backpacks.
"She collected about seven backpacks full of school supplies and when she found out that Valley House actually had quite a few more kids that needed backpacks and supplies I talked to my employers about that, Doctor John Roberts and Doctor Kevin Hall, and they volunteered to donate two hundred dollars to her so she could go shopping and make sure every kid at valley house got what they needed," said Trish Gomes.
Nola is hoping this will prompt others to give back too.
"Well I wanted to do the news story with you guys because I thought it would be good to do that because maybe if a grown up or somebody's kids saw it, they would do the same thing and try to make the world a better place," said Gomes.
A young girl inspiring us all to help our neighbors.
