Magic Valley Cleans Up After Flash Floods

By Jay Michaels

Filer, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) Three weeks ago, several Magic Valley towns were wading through some unexpected flash floods. More than 30 homes and several businesses were affected. Dozens of volunteers helped clean up in the aftermath of the flood waters.

Amanda Bohr, owner of Leapin Lillies Daycare, says, "The water came in through the back door and the front door. I got about six feet in my basement, two to three feet on the top."

More than an inch of rain fell in only 20 minutes. That ruined Bohr's preschool supplies, and left her daycare's carpets a soggy mess. For a week she moved the children to the Nazarene Church's fellowship hall.

Bohr says, "The kids really wanted to just come back and couldn't really understand why we couldn't be in the daycare. They would say, we just want to go back to our daycare. I told them, I'm working on it. I worked 6 a.m. to sometimes 11, 12 o'clock at night, just trying to get us back in here, and get it cleared up."

The childrens' parents and families helped clean up Leapin Lillies Daycare. Three dozen houses along with other businesses were also flooded. Volunteers showed up in force to help where they were needed most.

Filer Fire Chief Bud Compher says, "Kudos to the Mennonite Church who came out and supplied a bunch of people the following day to pump out a lot of houses, and help carry stuff out. Thank you very much, and to all the firemen who stayed most of the night helping out, too."

There's no official figure for Filer's flood damages, but Chief Compher estimates it in the thousands of dollars. And that's not counting the damages in Buhl or Hagerman, either.

The Filer Fire Department is planning a pancake supper to benefit the flood victims, but that hasn't been scheduled yet. So stay tuned for those details.
