Fairfield, California (CNN) A horrific scene this weekend in California.

Thousands of spectators watched as a plane crashed upside-down on a runway during an air show at Travis Air Force Base.

The crash happened while the 77-year-old pilot, Eddie Andreini, was attempting an acrobatic maneuver.

Andreini was killed.

Now, federal investigators are on the scene to figure out what led to the deadly accident.

"The NTSB will initiate investigations to determine the facts and conditions, which will lead us to the probable cause and possible recommendations in the future to prevent this accident from happening again," explained Howard Plagens, NTSB Investigator.

Officials say the pilot had been flying nearly all of his life.

And he had been performing in air shows for 25 years.
