Real Life Math Class Helps Cassia Students
Burley, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) Students at Burley High School are learning "real life" math. And they're sharing that information with other schools in Cassia County.
This Business Math class at Burley High School is helping seniors get a grasp on their finances. They may not have to make ends meet for their own households yet, but they'll need to someday. And what they learn now will help then.
Burley High School senior Loralee Bowen says, "How high interest rates, and how credit card companies get you. We're doing Dave Ramsey's course. He's gone over the importance of watching, and getting an emergency fund set up, how important those are. Because if anything can go wrong, it will go wrong."
Students in Oakley, Declo, and Malta also benefit from this and other classes taught at Burley High School through a distance learning program called the Idaho Education Network.
Bowen's classmate Ishmael Gastlum says, "We're able to, Mr. Gunderson is able to teach the class in different places. Right now we're on the system with Declo, so they're getting the class out to them as well."
Finances aren't the only subject students are learning this way. In addition to finding out about the financial bind that credit cards can get you into, students at Raft River High School, for example, can learn subjects like Spanish and German, even if they don't have teachers for those subjects at their school.
In the end, it's a win-win situation for everybody.
