State Senate Approves Controversial Name Change For Bay Bridge

San Francisco, California (CNN) - The western span of San Francisco's famous Bay Bridge appears to be getting a new name.

Lawmakers in the State Senate passed a measure today naming part of the bridge after former mayor Willie Brown... but according to San Francisco Weekly, a lawsuit expected to be filed today claims lawmakers slipped the vote through the legislature without following procedure.

The former mayor himself was among those weighing in today:

"A guy comes up to me and says, 'You know what Willie Brown? I don't like you very much. But I damn sure think they ought to name that bridge after you.' I said, 'Why?' He said, 'So I can run over you everyday.'"

A number of critics have said they oppose naming the iconic structure after a political figure as polarizing as Brown.

Current California Governor Jerry Brown has come out against naming the bridge after Willie Brown, but there appears to be little he can do about it. California's governor does not have veto power for nonbinding resolutions, and the renaming is not tied to any public funding.
