Sun Valley Summer Ice Skating Championships Underway

Sun Valley, Idaho - ( KMTV-TV / KSVT-TV) - The 48th annual Sun Valley Summer Ice Skating Championships is underway. It is the largest non-qualifying competition in the Northwest Region. The competition started today and will run through Sunday evening. There are over 200 entries. Skaters who enter can participate in multiple events. It is a non-qualifying competition, so there will be a lot of local talent and younger children participating.

One of the crown jewels of the competition is the showcase portion, which happens on Sunday. These are the more crowd-pleasing events, with glitzy costumes and props. The skating contest draws kids not only locally, but from as far away as Hong Kong.

“One of the great things about the skating culture in Sun Valley is not only do you have the traditional Sun Valley ice shows, which draw professionals from all over the world. We’ve got twenty coaches on staff, all in one spot. This is one of the only places in the world where skaters can come and be on a session with their Olympic champions and work with some of these fantastic coaches. It is a draw that no other place can equal,” said Scott Irvine, Sun Valley Ice Rink Manager and Ice Show Director.

Sun Valley encourages the public to come and check out the ice skating events. The competitions will run through Sunday. General public sessions will still be available over the weekend. To view the full schedule of events, visit the Sun Valley Figure Skating Club’s website,
