Unemployment Down For Different Reasons Nationally, Locally

By Jay Michaels

Twin Falls, Idaho ( KMVT-TV / KTWT-TV ) Unemployment rates are dropping across the nation and locally, too.

Nationwide, the unemployment rate dropped to just over seven percent, but that's because more than 300,000 people quit looking for work. Locally, the rate is near six percent, but working conditions are more positive here.

Jan Roeser, Regional Economist with the Idaho Department of Labor, "It's related to the fact that we have more jobs coming online, and we need more workers. People are slower to move at this point. You still have people moving into the area, absolutely."

There are fewer mining and construction jobs now, but agriculture and manufacturing remain strong. Overall growth is happening in pockets scattered across the Gem State.
