Wildfires Prompt State Of Emergency In Washington

By KMVT News

Leavenworth, Washington (CNN) - Several wildfires prompted the Governor of Washington state to declare a state of emergency for 20 counties.

The fast-moving Chiwaukum Creek fire is among them.

Authorities say nearly 900 homes received notices to evacuate immediately.

And authorities closed U.S. highway 2, the main road to Leavenworth.

The U.S. Forestry Service says the fire started as a 465-acre blaze earlier Wednesday, then grew rapidly.

About 180 firefighters are battling the fire.
