Four groups in the Magic Valley benefit from Food Bank grant
TWIN FALLS, IDAHO (KMVT-TV) The Idaho food bank fund just gave out its grants for the year. Four groups in the Magic Valley were recipients. The St. Jerome's food pantry and Salvation Army are two of the groups who received grants from the Idaho food bank. The money will be used for needed items other than food. The Salvation Army will put the money in their delivery truck. Nickie Krosese the business manager for Salvation Army said, "We couldn't live without this truck." It’s used to pickup and deliver food around the area. The lack of a lift at the back slows down the process. Krosese said, "That time could be used actually getting it out to people, so we're trying to cut that time period so that we have a better opportunity to get the food out to the people who really need it." So a new tailgate lift and pallet lift will be installed. In Jerome at the food pantry, their needs are completely different. Assistant coordinator for St. Jerome’s food ministry, Jeff Schroeder said, "We're applying it to savings for a walk in freezer cooler that we can used in our distribution area." They have a number of freezers scattered in the pantry along with an old freezer trailer in the back. Schroeder said, "That trailer freezer has gone down three times for us already this year and we've had to unload everything repairing it or defrost it and then move on." "This year the Idaho food bank gave out nearly $91,000 in grants up from last year which was about $78,000. The need has gone up in the last four years 93%." "This program has been running about 20 years and we've in the last three years have really seen it increase considerably,” Schroeder said. Many of the service organization in the Magic Valley extend a helping hand to each other to get the job done. "We can’t serve everybody, we're a small organization but we certainly have the contacts to get it out to a whole lot of people." With a little extra cash both organization hopes to get their services out to the needy more efficiently.
