2012 Hunting Season: A Look at the South Hills

Twin Falls, Idaho (KMVT-TV) There are concerns that this year's hunting season is going to be negatively impacted by the devastating fire season.

Dan Hadley has been hunting the South Hills all his life.

"You can see where the animals have come through and nibbled on the brush," said Hadley.

Speculation about this year's hunting season has been swirling since the Minidoka Complex Fire wiped out thousands of acres in the popular hunting grounds this summer.

But, from Hadley's point of view the fire hasn't put a damper on the hunting.

"It doesn't seem that the fires have really affected a lot of the game animals like everyone thinks they would,” said Hadley.

There's quite a bit of burned land, but as you can see behind me, within that burned land, there are pockets of habitat, which create the perfect environment for wildlife.

"Every time I've gone out I've seen game and a lot of shooter bucks have been out there,” said Hadley.

On a short trip through the burn area Monday morning we saw a nice bull elk and dozens of mule deer.

A herd of ten to fifteen mule deer were grazing on the fresh grass that's starting to sprout up in the burn area.

"The deer will come out and they will eat on that, get some good nutrients,” said Hadley.

It was under similar conditions Hadley shot the biggest buck of his career.

"Driving along, seen the biggest deer of my life and stopped and shot it. And, it was right in the middle of the burn area,” said Hadley.

Hadley's hoping this season yields similar results.
